The world of dentistry is exciting. Well, at least for us… We never seem to stop learning and new research is always being done to improve our knowledge and services for you!
For example, new research shows that fluoride may have yet another trick up its sleeve! While we already knew that this element works by strengthening the enamel of our teeth, there is research that shows this isn’t all it can do.
A study published in Langmuir found that fluoride also works by stopping bacteria from being able to stick to our teeth. This makes it harder for cavities to develop when bacteria can be washed away so easily by simply drinking water, brushing or even saliva flow.
Researchers tested this theory by studying fake teeth made of the same material as real teeth. Using a microscope they realized that bacteria were not able to cling tightly to teeth that was treated with a fluoride rinse.
If you want to strengthen your teeth and prevent cavities from developing, visit Buckhead Dental Partners. We offer fluoride treatment for healthy teeth!
What is Fluoride?
Fluoride is an element that is naturally occurring and is found in the earth’s crust and some natural water sources. It is used in dentistry because it has proven to prevent cavities.
Many communities have fluoridated water. However, if your community doesn’t offer it, you may need supplements of this element. While you can find toothpastes, mouthrinses, gels and other oral care products that contain this element, receiving fluoride treatment from your dentist office is the ideal source. This is because the treatment is of professional strength and safe use is practiced by our skilled staff.
Fluoride Treatments at Buckhead Dental Partners
At our office we offer fluoride treatments during regular check-ups. Our treatment allows direct contact between this element and your teeth and is usually completed in just minutes.
We recommend not eating or drinking for at least thirty minutes after receiving the treatment. Depending on the state of your oral health, our dentist may recommend following up with these treatments every three, six or twelve months. Our dentist will also give you tips on how to keep your teeth healthy with additional fluoride supplements on a daily basis.
